Delivery Driver Safety Tips
Posted on 11/17 by Erin Helms
Delivery driving is a dangerous job. The consumer demand for this industry is steadily increasing, creating safety challenges. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to delivery driver safety, but there are measures you can take to make your deliveries safer for you.
Make Driving Safely a Priority
Drive defensively. Although aggressive driving may speed up your delivery, it is ultimately not worth the risk. Try to avoid distracted driving. Only use hands-free controls for mobile phones while driving and set navigation before starting a trip. Ensure your vehicle operates safely by checking your headlights, signals, windshield wipers, and other components.
Avoid Driver Fatigue
Drivers are three times more likely to be in a vehicle accident when fatigued. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep per night to avoid fatigue. If you fail to get at least six hours of sleep, you risk falling asleep at the wheel. Caffeine is not always the answer, as it can alter your sleep patterns and potentially worsen fatigue. Be aware of the signs of fatigue when you are on the road. Of course, there is the drowsiness and yawning, but there are other signs of fatigue, including: Drifting onto the shoulder Missing turns Reduced reduction time Highway hypnosis If you are fatigued, pull over and take a break. Stretching can increase blood flow and alertness. If you take a brief nap, ensure you wait 15 minutes after waking before getting back on the road.
Physical Safety
You must understand how to keep yourself and your delivery items safe while on the road. Try to park in well-lit areas and avoid driveways requiring you to back up. Always lock your vehicle when parked, and never leave it running unattended. If you handle cash, keep it as concealed as possible while limiting how much money you carry. Avoid making bank deposits alone. Only make deliveries at well-lit front doors and refuse any orders that seem suspicious. Avoid dark alleys, rear entrances, icy walkways, and snow hazards. Always be mindful of weather conditions.
COVID Considerations
Always clean and disinfect your vehicle and equipment. Try to emphasize areas frequently touched, such as the steering wheel, door handles, and touch screens. ALWAYS wash your hands. Wash them often and for at least 20 seconds. No water? Keep hand sanitizer handy. When possible, opt for contactless payment systems and avoid handling cash. Wear a facemask and gloves consistently when making deliveries and handling packages and equipment. Maintain social distancing. Stay 6 feet away from other people, including your customers, when possible. Take care of devices that collect signatures and sanitize these devices often.
