The hospitality industry includes hotels, resorts, restaurants, food services, fast food, coffee shops, bars, nightclubs and casinos. It is an industry that offers exciting and unique work. The hospitality industry offers excellent career opportunities with room for career progression. Here are tips for getting your foot into this exciting industry.
Start With Entry-Level Positions
Dream big, but start with a position to get your foot in the door, especially if you need more industry experience. Most entry-level jobs are available regardless of education level. No work history? No problem. Thanks to high demand, employers are not too picky as long as you are honest and hardworking. Here are five jobs in the industry you can get with little or no experience: Hotel receptionist Concierge staff Housekeeping staff Waiters Porter
Consider Seasonal Work
The hospitality industry hires around 15% of all seasonal workers. Seasonal opportunities are an excellent way to test your skills and passions and determine what positions are your proper fit. The longer you are available for work, the better your chances of landing a full-time job. Workers who can work an entire season typically receive preference for full-time opportunities.
Widen the Search Area
When looking for hospitality jobs, move beyond your hometown. Employers for resorts, restaurants, and hotels hire workers from all over the country. National parks and casinos need so many people each year that they hire individuals from abroad to work during the busiest seasons. There are benefits beyond the ease of getting hired too. Many hospitality employers provide food and accommodations; you can explore a new place without paying for a vacation! To get your foot in the door, be flexible. There are many ways to get a job in the hospitality industry.
Address Your Lack of Experience
Worrying about your lack of experience when finding a job in a new industry is natural. However, emphasize the applicable skills from previous professional experience and how to use them in your new role. Employers will be more apt to give you an opportunity. Refrain from dwelling on your past career path. Acknowledge it and describe the ways you plan to transition what you know from your past jobs to your new hospitality career. Remember to present your past experiences and skills with current job responsibilities. Study the requirements for the job, and make your existing skills as relevant as possible.
Show Dedication
If you wish to start a new career in hospitality, expect to walk the extra mile to make up for your lack of experience. Do not hesitate to prove your determination. Deliver more than expected, ask questions and chase for answers. Show your improvement. Explore educational programs, internships and training opportunities, anything that will give you an edge against more experienced candidates.

Stand out as a desirable company to work for, and retain your best talent, by understanding what your employees really want. It’s a common refrain from managers and HR offices in the past few years -- “Nobody wants to work anymore!” For what it’s worth, that’s a complaint that has been voiced for more than 100 years; everything old is new again. The truth is that people don’t want to work for less than what they’re worth; they don’t want to be told to be grateful just for having a job that pays them and they don’t want to feel like they have to sacrifice their personal lives and time for a job that doesn’t appreciate them. As a manager, you might be on the defensive already and that’s understandable. But take a moment and consider what your employees actually want from your company before skipping on to your next piece of reading material. Here’s what employees want:
