First days are hard. Remember walking into kindergarten for the first time? Well, the initial shift at a new employer can have the same vibe. Don’t let anxieties take over though. Starting a new gig should be an exciting experience. You just need to get in the right mindset and take the necessary steps to set yourself up for success. Here are a few tips to make your first day on the new job a great start to the next stage of your career:

Learn as Much as Possible Ahead of Time

Don’t go into your first day cold. Rather, find out as much as possible ahead of time. If you can get a jumpstart on training and onboarding, you can impress from the first moment.

Get There Early

Showing up late on the first day sends a terrible message. Make sure that doesn’t happen. Take the appropriate steps to get there early: Wake up earlier than necessary Prepare as much as possible the night before Practice your commute Leave plenty of time for traffic

Ask Questions

People are happy to guide newcomers. This patience tends to wane as you spend time at the company. That means your best time to ask questions comes when you’re first hired. Take advantage of this window. Ask any question you can. Learn about your job and about the company. If you don’t ask now, you might be embarrassed to pose the same questions later.

Show Your Positive Attitude

Come in ready to work. Be confident and upbeat. You don’t need to go overboard (that might rub people the wrong way). But you should exude a positive attitude as you get started.

Figure Out Logistics

You need to learn about your job and about your employer. But there are other more informal lessons that you have to take in. This includes simple things like: Where are the bathrooms? How do I find the breakroom? Where do people park? How do people schedule lunch breaks? These represent just a few examples of the logistical items you need to understand to make your workday go smoothly.

Introduce Yourself

Get to know the people around you. Don’t be shy. Introduce yourself to your coworkers. Learn as much as you can about them. Not only will they make a great career resource, they could become close friends of yours.

Watch Your Coworkers

Not all training is formal. You can pick up hints about how to behave by watching your new coworkers. They will show you the unspoken rules for succeeding in your new position.

Prepare for the Long Haul

Remember: your first day is just the initial step. Hopefully, you’ll be with the company for a long time. Don’t overdo Day One. Just set the stage for success over time.
